Reflection #2 (Personal Reflection)

The main target of this course (LSC Academic Reading and Writing) is to improve students English language level in reading, writing and communication. Furthermore, to explore knowledge in new vocab, this is needful in business communication and daily practice. In the beginning I have learned how to write very good summaries. Our instructor Mr. Gregory has taught us how to pick up the main points in an article and how to write it in the correct form. Also learned how do quotation and citations. Additionally, I have learned the way to define the outlines of the main points of the article in order to write an essay the most special think I interested while learning it is referencing. It supports my essay and making my writing strong. All this skills could help me in my major and my future career. Later on, if I have any research or report to do in future, I will know how to do it in a simple and scientific form the most part I like it in this course is the way we are learning and doing our homework because it helps us to improve our vocabulary. For example, from our projects I learnt a lot of new words and new information. Also, my reading and writing skills get improved and less mistakes. In addition, The vocabulary quizzes helped me to realize that each word can have different meanings in each sentence depending on the order of the word and wither it’s a noun or a verb or…etc.

My biggest challenges in written communication are using more formal way and choosing the right vocab that suite the subjects that I’m writing about or trying to deliver threw my scientific articles. Another challenge is to avoid repetitive info and keeping my writing within the average of word required. Overall, while studying in this course I have got better understating In English language. , I would say thank you to Mr. Gregory for teaching me and I really enjoyed your course very much.

Essay #2

Introduction

The Story of Stuff (2007) is a documentary video, which explains from where the stuff comes from and where, does it go. In books it is mentioned that stuff have to simply pass through these stages: first is extraction than second one is production followed by distribution after that consumption and final is disposal. Every stage is interacting with the real world. It’s relating with societies, nations, economies and the atmosphere. People are the one who runs the system and for whom the whole system works.

Extraction

The process of extraction undermines the ecological impact of overuse of resources. Leonard goes on explain that production primarily deals with the production of toxic contaminated products which are not only harmful for the planet, but also for the living beings inhabiting it. Also the major multinational corporations use the term ‘Distribution’ for ‘selling of toxic chemicals’ or externalizing the cost. Cheap products are produced at the expense of environmental safety. ‘The heart of the system’, i.e., consumption inherently implies the notion of ‘keeping the materials flowing’. People are perceived as consumers and their essential identities have taken a backseat. In fact only 1% of the total materials produced are consumed (Leonard, 2007).

Production:

The usage of vigor to mix poisonous with the natural resources makes a production of poisonous contaminated goods. There are several synthetic chemicals in our current world was tested a few of the effects that affecting the people health. It has even been tested for world health influences and none of them have been tested for synergistic health effects.

We are exposed to these chemicals on everyday basis when they get interacted with other chemicals (US Journal, 2008).

In present world, consumers have reached a point where the smallest members or new coming members of our societies, including our babies and even many women’s who are at the age of reproductive.

Distribution

This means selling of all the toxic contaminated junk is done on a very rapid speed. The goal is to keep the value down, and let the persons buying and keeps the inventory moving.

How the prices are kept down? Well, the store workers are not paid so much and they can withhold on health insurance every time they can. The distribution of all these things results in negative effects to the environment. Energy used to transfer all stuff around the world it also for lighting and dominated of all shopping centers and department stores. “This has given rise to increase of asthma and cancer among workers” (McKibben, 2007).

Consumption

Consumption means “Current consumption patterns are unsustainable and inequitable and must be changed” (The Story of Stuff Project, 2007). Nowadays, there are kind of consumption patterns are unsustainable and unfair and should be changed. But, change the behavior of consumer is not enough. We must buy the less damage product available and at reasonable prices. For example people in high income countries waste a lot of water when taking a shower or washing a car, people should be more efficient in spending water and because of that we get water shortages. Also, people buy a newer version of the same product and they throw away their old product although the difference between the two products isn’t big.

Disposal

“At the finale what occurs to the things we buy, all goes out in the garage and this brings the imports to disposal. In US citizens makes at least 4 ½ pounds of garbage a day” (American Rivers, 2008). This is almost twice what each of the citizens uses to make 30 years ago.

First of all the garbage either goes to landfill or buried otherwise first it is burned and then buried. Are all the ways to land, water and air, which in turn change the climate? One should focus on recycling rather than dumping and burring the waste.

Consumerisms in UAE

According to research it is found that residents of the UAE feel that the burgeoning expatriate population in addition to consumerism is the greatest intimidation to the citizens. UAE citizens feel that in their culture religious practices are diluting because of large number of expatriates visiting UAE. The highest threat is of "highly materialistic and consumerist society". Expatriates from worldwide are living in UAE, which have in turn increased the consumerism and purchasing power of UAE citizens.
1. UAE is becoming a shopping hub in the world, they are mostly attracted by number of retailers and even they launch “ Shopping Festival “ which attracts number of consumer’s worldwide to visit UAE for shopping.

2. Increasing Expatriates is giving rise to pollution and population in the country, which is in turn affecting the health of citizens of the country.

Conclusion

People or consumers should start believing and supporting renewable resources and even companies should start to support recycling of the goods. Government should make certain rules and regulation for customers that they should not indulge in buying of repetitive products in one home. Initiatives should be taken care of correct usage of natural resources.

Essay #1

Radio

Introduction
Radio is the small electronic device that contains electromagnet spectrum and is being used for a wide range of purposes. From its beginning till now the radio is being used to deliver messages to masses whether it's strictly news stories like in its beginning period, or broadcasting new music to fans across the world now a days. It played a major role in the World War II as three international broadcasters the BBC World Service, Voice of America and Deutsche Welle generated news to the masses:

“They sent out words, not bullets; ideas not bombs, and they broke down a wall and helped break up an evil empire.” (Wood, 2000)

Early history of Radio

The inception of radio started back in 1864 when James Clarke Maxwell presented a theory that when electricity passes through a wire it gives invisible waves under certain conditions, then Heinrich Hertz proved this theory true in 1887-8. Then come a Russian scientist professor Popov who tried to experiment with the wireless transmission in 1895. After him there was an Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi who successfully transmitted wireless signals in his radio telegraph assignment. It was the first successful experiment began in 1895 and continued through 1899. His wireless transmission was first to send across the distance of 2 miles and gradually it increased to 8 miles. Then after few developments in his experiment the first radio telephony program was broadcasted in year 1906 at Brank rock city when a guy sang and played the violin, his audience was few notified newspaper representatives who thought that they were hearing angel’s voice coming from the equipment called radio.

Development

Finally in October 1917, the Russian cruiser Aurora broadcasted the world’s first public service radio broadcast before that all the broadcasting was for the personal experiments, none of them tried public service radio broadcast. The major developments in radio initially were for ship-to-shore communications mainly. In 1926 the primary broadcasting network was shaped, launching the golden age of radio, typically attributable with making the primary trendy broadband FM system, Armstrong engineered and operated the primary FM station, KE2XCC, in 1938 at Alpine, It was the the smallest yet costly style of amusement throughout the great Depression, the radio set became a customary unit fixture, notably within the United States. On June 30, 1948 the semiconductor was with success incontestable at Bell Laboratories (Naughton, 2001). The semiconductor allowed radios to become smaller in size. In 1959, Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce was authorized the primary patent for the microcircuit they formed.

Modern Development
Nodaway’s radio size is way too compact than ever before. Numerous radio stations have been formed in United Arab Emirates to fulfill the purpose of information and entertainment. Few years back people used to listen to radio on their tape recorders with the AM and PM frequencies along with the antenna that rarely caught signals (Browne, 1982). After some developments radio became more compact and only FM frequency replaced AM and PM without any hassle of antenna, and then this technology made a place in our cell phones and now in our Smartphone.

“The story of FM since 1980 is increasingly of the medium as an integral definer of radio, expecially in its many music formats…” (Keith, 2008)

From huge tape recorders in home to Smartphone’s in our pocket, Radio has been a source of true infotainment since decades. During the past few years, the United Arab Emirates FM radio business has been undergoing a boom within the variety of prime quality industrial domestic and international FM radio stations that are providing quality infotainment to Arabs.

Conclusion

The large number of stations are remarkable. They broadcast a range of programs all over the day through that content producer and advertisers are targeting the masses. Around the globe there are over 2 billion radio devices in use or about one radio device for every 3 persons is an example that video transmission can never kill the radio star!
